The Shaded Shortcut

Background

Background

For my Design + Communities course in Fall 2022, I embarked on a research project at the University of Arkansas to analyze behavioral patterns around the Fine Arts Center entrances. The objective was to discern whether these entrances were primarily used for building access or as a shortcut between Union Station and the Music building.

Methodology

Methodology

  • Employed structured observation over 1 hour and 45 minutes across two days, monitoring 253 individuals.

  • Analysis revealed 68.4% used the entrances as a shortcut, with a significant majority being students (93.28%).

  • A notable finding was the higher frequency of female pass-throughs and entries.

Conclusion

Conclusion

This study underscored the entrances' role more as a thoroughfare than an access point, likely influenced by the center's strategic positioning. The data hints at broader usage trends and opens avenues for further investigation into architectural and spatial dynamics on campus.
